The Prayer Shawl Ministry
The prayer shawl ministry is an idea that Joyce Shaw saw in USA
and already it has proved valuable in our church. It can involve
EVERYONE...donate wool or money, knit or crotchet AND pray about the
ministry. As the person knits/crotchets, they are asked to pray for
the person receiving it. It is meant to give comfort to the wearer,
and at the moment we are giving to the bereaved, lonely, or ill.
Eventually, as the ministry increases, it will extend to celebrate,
new babies, marriage, students leaving home etc.
As the shawls accumulate, there is then a blessing/dedication of the
shawls where everyone involved can lay hands on the shawls at the
altar rail as they are blessed before distribution. Each shawl has a
luggage label attached, explaining that the church has made it to
give courage, fortitude and comfort to the person receiving
it...given with love. The outreach into the community has been
tremendous as this is for anyone, not particularly those who attend
church. The response from the recipients has been wonderful and
encouraging... an all round blessing! I wish that every church tried
this ministry as it has such a great impact on the
community...another way of expressing God's love for us.
